Do you want your school community to learn British Sign Language?
This exciting new resource has been created for use by schools, after school clubs, lunch time clubs and other groups.
The resource contains 36 carefully constructed lesson plans which explain precisely how to deliver each lesson including activities, vocabulary lists, resources, deaf awareness and culture. The lessons cover vocabulary linked to schools, major festivals and everyday experiences.
The first 5 lessons need to be delivered chronologically and thereafter, they can be delivered in the order that suits your children and the school year.
In order to deliver the course, the tutor should have a working knowledge of British Sign Language and be qualified to at least level 2 BSL or be deaf themselves. There are often members of staff or parents who have these qualifications within the school community and would be willing to share their expertise but have not had the confidence to offer a club without a supporting curriculum.
British Sign Language can contribute to your Modern Foreign Language offer. It enables children to quickly learn a new skill, communicate with deaf children and adults and to develop a greater understanding of communication and deaf culture. It is a great way to include deaf parents or children in your community or just learn a new language.
